No Pens Wednesday! Pupils and staff put down their pens and pencils for a day to take part in a national speaking and listening event. No Pens Wednesday encourages us to focus all learning through speaking and listening rather than writing. The children had great fun taking part in a range of activities such as debates and role play, while at the same time learning skills that will help them develop socially and academically. To find out more about the importance of speaking and listening visit http://www.thecommunicationtrust.org.uk/.

This week, as it is social media week, we have been thinking about keeping safe on the internet.  The children have attended an assembly to learn with Smartie the Penguin, Kara and the Smart Crew and Newrounds Caught in the web.  They have also worked together in their classrooms to further their knowledge.  Reception and KS1 have been learning with Lee and Kim and have helped Sid to become Super Protectors!  KS2 have been visiting the cybercafé to learn about how we use the internet responsibly, how we communicate, the safe use of emails, picture messaging, texting and chatting with care.  Today we have had a fantastic afternoon of ‘Speed –E-Learning’.  Thank you to the parents who came to join us.  We hope you enjoyed and learnt new things about being online (we particularly enjoyed the songs!)

Farewell Year 6

Today at Eastlands Primary it was time to say goodbye to our Year 6 children.  They gave a fantastic performance of  the play Reach for the Sky.  There was some fantastic singing and very confident acting. There were lots of tears from the children, the parents and the staff. Thank you to Mrs Spyroe for all the hard work that goes into preparing for a performance.  We wish all of the children the very best of luck at secondary school and for their futures.  And remember to keep ‘reaching for the sky’ and fulfil your dreams.

Mark Pawsey MP visits Eastlands Primary!

Today at school we had a very special visitor in our assembly.  Mark Pawsey MP came to Eastlands to find out more about the E-safety learning that we do in our school.  He also came to congratulate year 5 on their fantastic film, he was very impressed with it!  He told us about his life as an MP, where he works and what he does.  We all listened very carefully and there were some very knowledgeable children that knew something about the House of Commons. Mark was very happy to answer some very thoughtful questions from the children too.

High Sheriff Awards

Year 5 were invited to attend the High Sheriff Awards at North Leamington School. Our E-safety learning, including the award winning film ‘The anti-social network’ has been recognised by members of Crimebeat as a project of merit and achievement that benefits the community and we were invited to receive a Certificate of Recognition.  The evening started with a chance to showcase our learning about E-safety in the ‘marketplace’.  Our stall was visited by Crimebeat members, Mayors from all parts of Warwickshire and other dignitaries. Then the time had arrived for us to share our learning on stage!  It started with an introduction by Mrs Corrigan to explain what our project was about.  Then we showed the trailer for the film and the audience was hooked.  Mr Howes wrote a short drama of the film which was performed by Year 5 with real professionalism.  We shared a montage of photographs to show how the film was made and our involvement in it from the start to finish.  A huge round of applause and whoop whoops from the crowd ended our performance.  Again Year 5, you should feel very proud of your achievements.

E-Safety Town Hall Visit

On Monday 17th June, some of Year five attended a very special meeting at the Town Hall. Eastlands Primary School has been awarded a commendation, the first one ever to be awarded, by the Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Ron Ball.  We were asked to attend the meeting to celebrate the fantastic award winning film 'The Anti-social Network'. The meeting was also attended by the Chief Constable of Warwickshire, Andy Parker. He congratulated Year five on the fantastic work they have produced over the last year towards educating others about staying safe online.  The children were able to ask both the Chief Constable and the Police and Crime Commissioner questions about their jobs.  They in turn asked the children "what should you do if you are aware of bullying behaviour either towards you or others?" A fantastic reply was "talk to a trusted adult either at home or school”. Well done Year five, a fantastic achievement.

2012 Summer Olympics torch relay

The traditional lighting ceremony took place on 10 May 2012 at the Temple of Hera, Olympia, home of the Ancient Olympic Games.  The torch relay travelled around Greece, before arriving at the Panathinaiko Stadium, in Athens on 17 May for the handover ceremony.

The torch relay will last 70 days, with 66 evening celebrations, six island visits with about 8,000 people carrying the torch a total distance of about 8,000 miles (12,800 km), starting from Land's End in Cornwall.

The torch relay will bring the Olympics to within 1 hour of 95% of the UK population. It is intended to help the London 2012 Olympic Legacy by getting school children, local celebrities and local people involved.

The children and staff of Eastlands Primary School were there!! (Monday 2 July 2012)

The Olympic Torches are made of aluminum alloy skin, perforated by 8,000 circles representing the 8,000 torchbearers who will carry the flame. The triangular-shaped torches represent:

The colour of the torch is gold; this represents the qualities of the Olympic Flame – the brightness and the warmth of the light that it shines. The torch was designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. It stands 80 centimetres (31 in) high, tested to withstand all likely weather conditions. Production of the torches started at the end of 2011.

We will shortly be uploading photographs of the event and links to the official torch relay ‘live feed’  http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/video/

OUR ROYAL WEDDING

Thursday 28th April, a bright and breezy day for our wonderful Royal Wedding.

Children from ALL year groups came together to give the whole school and guests a right Royal Wedding performance.

We had it all; a blushing bride, a handsome groom, pretty bridesmaids, a best man, parents of the bride and groom, press photographers, flowers, decorations and confetti.

Our Wedding Official performed the ceremony with much aplomb and we all enjoyed a lovely celebration.

The photographers are processing their photos and the 'Photo Editor' is currently putting together a 'Souvenir Web Page' which will appear here shortly.

Thank you so much to all of our parents; your children looked great in school today and those children who starred in the wedding looked a million dollars!

Here's to the happy couple.

OUR ROYAL WEDDING: The Photos!

Thank you to all the Parents who came to our service; I know the children were really proud of their efforts and loved performing for you all.

Thank you to Jimmy and Abbi for the photos.

Well done.
