Autumn 2
Maths
wc 03.11 – This week we have begun a new unit! We are exploring numbers within 20 and been using visual representations to help us count on. We have discussed that counting on can be an effective way to work out how many of an object there are. In addition to this, the children worked hard to produce some beautiful number lines (1-20) with a visual representation of the number in pairs.
English
wc 03.11 – In English this week we have been working hard to write a sentence about our half term holiday. The children have been working hard to ensure their sentences has both a capital letter and a full stop. We have also been working with the children to reflect on what some of their favourite bits of work have been ready for TLC discussions next week.
Science – Seasonal Changes: Autumn and Winter
wc 03.11 – In our new Science topic this week, the children have been considered the different seasons. We also then went on a nature walk around the playground and found some ‘signs of Autumn’. It was lovely to see the children looking carefully at what they could see outside and make the links to the season.
Theme (History) – Grace Darling
wc 03.11 – This week we have started our History topic all about Grace Darling. The children have explored who she is and why she was famous. Next week, we will be sequencing what happened in her life and putting that onto a timeline using the knowledge learnt this week.
PE

wc 03.11 – This week we have started a dance unit alongside an Invasion Games unit. In dance, the children considered different movements as I read out a poem. They did well to match the tempo of my reading and match their actions to the words of the poem (for example; being tall when a mountain was mentioned.

wc 03.11 – This week in music assembly the children have started learning some of the songs ready for their Christmas performance!

wc 03.11 – The children have been incredibly patient this week as we have continued to try and log onto the Chromebooks. Unfortunately, there were some technical issues but the children worked hard to practice typing in their username and password.
Worldviews – What do some people believe God looks like?
wc 03.11 – In Worldviews this week we have started a new topic. This term’s topic is titled, ‘What do some people believe God looks like?’ In the lesson this week the children worked hard expressing ideas about how God could be represented by creating a piece of artwork expressing how some people might view God. It was lovely to see the children respecting other people’s views and ideas and create some beautiful and thoughtful artwork.

Maths
The children have worked incredibly hard this half term. To begin the half term we focused on numbers within 10. Then we moved onto adding and subtracting and the children adjusted well to the new star words for this unit and used them correctly. The children had a lovely time exploring 2-D and 3-D shapes and then explored patterns.

English
In English this half term we explored a booked called, ’10 things I can do to help my planet’, we did lots of art work related to the book to help spark enthusiasm for English. We then considered different ways to help look after the planet and be more sustainable. The discussions the children were having were very mature and on topic. The children then were able to explore instructions and even made some bird feeders. They then went onto writing their own instructions using an example and they did a fabulous job copying the layout and writing their instructions. The children have also worked hard on their handwriting and focuses hard when learning the correct formation of letters. Amazing work children!

Science -
Our Science topic this half term was plants. The children worked hard to learn the different parts of plants and even began to identify different plants and types of flowering plants. We also went on a nature walk for the children to explore if things were plants or weren’t. great job Polar Bears.

Theme (Geography) – Why don’t penguins need to fly?
The geography unit this half term was called, ‘Why don’t penguins need to fly?’. This topic introduced Year 1 to the concept of biomes and natural regions which will be explored in greater depth at a later stage. The children considered the adaptations of penguins and camels. We then considered the similarities and differences of the Arctic and the Antarctic. The children also explored why there are no Polar Bears in Antarctica – which was very exciting considering we are Polar Bears Class!

PE
In PE this term the children explored multi-skills and hockey. They worked hard to build confidence and understanding of different skills and knowledge of where the skills may be useful in the future. In hockey the children have considered how to safely navigate space and also how their bodies reacted to hockey activities.
Art
Please note, art and computing taught every other week.
In the first unit in Year 1 was all about exploring line and shape. The children starting by experimenting with different types of line and then moved onto connecting lines to create shapes and then organic shapes. It was wonderful to see the children talk about what they like and dislike about their artwork.

Music
It was wonderful to see the children being enthusiastic and hands on with their music unit this term. The unit was titled, ‘Hey You!’. This old-school hip hop tune was writing by Joanna Mongona specifically written for children to explore. The children really enjoyed the warm-up games and with practice were really good at them, they also enjoyed learning the song and bopping along.
Computing
Please note, computing and art are taught every other week.
In the last couple of weeks in Autumn 1 the children began exploring turning the chrome books on and off, and also began to discuss log in details and the need for a password.
Worldviews – How did the world begin?
Our worldviews topic this term explored how different people think the world began. The children discussed ideas about how natural things were created and what makes a creator. They worked incredibly hard sequencing the key events of the Hindu creation story. The children were also introduced to ‘The Wonder Box’ which is a box where children can ask questions they may not be confident asking in class.
